This was an idea of the bijoux girl's. I said I was looking for more pattern ideas and she pulled out the big book of William Morris designs (we've many books about the great man, but this was the really big one!) So here's my humble attempt to collect a few ideas...xx

Last Drawing (Painting) of January...

Posted by Clare Brookes on Tuesday, February 2, 2016,

This is my friend's peacock, again... He's so lovely tho, how could I resist?! His name is Duran, he only has 2 tail eye feathers and a funny half-eye (maybe there's a peacock-expert name for that?) I worked in pencil, then watercolour, then back in pencil and I love working this way.

So what's next? Well it's February so there's this wonderful drawing challenge I like to do with some great artists and there are always new artists joining us. Go here to check it out. I'll be back to pencil drw...

Mother and Daughter #3
I want to use more pattern in my drawings, and who better to look to than Gustav Klimt?! Some of his patterns work well in paint only and some I am very pleased with the effect here. I want the faces bigger though, they are hard for me on so small a scale...xx

A week of drawing...

Posted by Clare Brookes on Saturday, January 9, 2016,

So I made a whole week's worth of drawings, and I feel much better - they are quicker to work on and feel easier and more fun. Time to start trying something a little different, but first here's Day 8 - a Mexican child, such a cutie - I couldn't help drawing her. I'd like to have another go because there was a sense of ennui or perhaps almost sadness that I would like to capture...xx

Happy New Year

Posted by Clare Brookes on Saturday, January 2, 2016,

Happy New Year everyone!

Last year I wanted to do a drawing a day, but I was not very well so it came to an early end n February. However I've worked hard to do a drawing or a sketch or a design most days, and I've felt much better on the days that I've drawn something.

So. This year I'm going to try again: to set myself an new art year's resolution, and to draw every day. I'm starting with portraits. There are a few I have been wanting to do for a while. Also I think some animal portraits will...

Tree patterns

Posted by Clare Brookes on Sunday, November 8, 2015,
Y'know sometimes, when I'm looking at trees, it makes me think slightly deep thoughts, like:

Sometimes it seems like a paradox how different and, at the same time, exactly similar, many things are. How we see a pattern, yet the individual elements in that pattern each seem unique. So is it a true pattern? I know humans look for patterns, why do we have that facility? Maybe that's not so deep for you.

We recognise a birch leaf. Look closer. See this one is longer, this slightly bigger than that....

Illustration Friday - Work

Posted by Clare Brookes on Tuesday, September 1, 2015,

"Work" by Clare Brookes

For this week's subject I simply picked a photo I had taken of a guy at work. I had taken the photo in the forst place because I loved the pose and the costume. The job this chap was doing, tho, was rather brilliant. He was part of a tightwire act, mostly clowning with the audience and setting up for the aerialists. At this moment he was checking the tension on the high wire. As the day had been wet, then warm, then dry and cold, he had to adjust throughout the show.

I h...

Illustration Friday "Rescue"

Posted by Clare Brookes on Friday, August 30, 2013,

When I got the topic for this week's Illustration Friday "Rescue" the first thing I thought about was:

"What do I need rescuing from?"

My thoughts are all a-clutter, my life is too busy (and the only thing I want to give up is my day job) my ideas are spread like butter on a giant piece of bread, and sprinkled with glitter.

The next thing I about thought was:

"Who's gonna rescue me?"

I liked the idea of a dragon or a mythical creature, but in the end the only one who is going to recue me is...wel...

My First Drawing

My First Drawing

This activity is for little tiny bubs, as soon as they can grasp a pen and sit up straight they can try this!

You will need: choice of drawing implements eg felt tip pens, crayons, pencils, plain paper, high chair, optional old clothes

To introduce my little one to drawing with crayons, felt pens and pencils I sat her up in her high chair with something to draw on. She could not roam and draw on the walls. The table of the high chair was easy to wipe clea...
