Choosing Colours

Posted by Clare Brookes on Friday, August 20, 2010,

To me colour is one of the most expressive aspects of a painting, I often choose to work with a limited colour palette. Until recently I would just work away with the colours I had chosen and get frustrated with the mixing process. A friend of mine reminded me, last year, of the process in the fashion industry of making a 'mood board' and pre-selecting colours. Now I develop my colours alongside my design ideas. One way I pick colours is to mix aimlessly, playing around until something clicks...

Rainbows

“The work will wait while you show your child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you do the work.” - Patricia Clafford

I always find rainbows inspiring. I think they are very good for the soul. (Wikipedia has a really good article on rainbows: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow) It's really about the colours, I love a piece of rainbow ribbon or a rainbow painting, and I try to use rainbow colours in a lot of my work. I find it sad how little most people know about colour and w...

Music Is Not Only The Food Of Love

Posted by Clare Brookes on Wednesday, August 18, 2010,

I don't know where my art would be without music. Sometimes I want to be musical, (sometimes I want to be a witch or a cat, an actor or a hermit or just nothing in the middle of Mongolia) I always feel inspired when I hear music I love, even if I've heard it a thousand times before. It keeps my hope alive, sometimes it's even kept me alive. I think if someone can put so much passion into a pop song I can do that in a painting. One of my favourite pieces of work (no photo, sorry, I'll try t...

Whatever Happened To The Suspension Of Disbelief?

Posted by Clare Brookes on Monday, August 16, 2010,
How does Igglepiggle get to and from his boat? How can Upsy Daisy and the others get into the tiny Ninky Nonk? How does Mummy pig fit into a tent the size of her head when Peppa and George are inside already? If you're a parent you've probably found yourself wondering similar things. Why don't bees wear pants? Why does Spirit have an american accent? And Po and Tigress for that matter?

I watch my 2 year old thoroughly enjoying these films and TV shows and she never questions anything, and of c...

Kung Fu Panda

Posted by Clare Brookes on Saturday, August 14, 2010,
I love kids TV, (good thing really as I get to watch a lot of it these days) and I love quotes and sayings (check out my quote of the week on Twitter- faerieclareart) Kung Fu Panda is chock full of loveable, wise and inspiring quotes. Here are my favourites:
Oogway:
"There is just news, there is no good or bad."
"The panda will never fulfill his destiny, nor you yours, until you let go of the illusion of control."
"Yesterday is history, tomoro is a mystery, today is a gift, that is why it is call...

The Artist's Way

Posted by Clare Brookes on Tuesday, August 10, 2010,
I've just started working through "The Artist's Way", by Julia Cameron, for the second time and I'm already feeling the effects. For those not familiar with TAW it is a 12 week process to connect with your creative side (and a book), and provides tools which can be used for ever after. I worked through the book alone years ago and felt much more in touch with myself, but slowly I stopped working with the tools. This time I have goals and aims and I'm working in a group. My life seems very muc...
